I am sitting in the lobby of Asian Hope’s hostel, called “the Sanctuary,” in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. We have just returned from a huge feast with a Cambodian businessman who invited us to dine at his restaurant, but that is another story, for later. Right now, I want to record how we finished our time in India.
After completing the Pastor’s conference on Monday, the 23rd, we spent the following day in Combatoire. We had our first team devotions, and took a bus downtown to shop.
I am sitting in a church in Bangalore. This church is the ‘home base’ for the children’s homes and local churches we have been visiting in our travels. The church is on the second floor of a building in a downtown area, a midsized open space with imitation wood floors and a low stage built at one end. A wooden cross graces the wall behind the stage. Rays of light are painted on the wall emanating from the cross, with the names of God – “Alpha and Omega, Jehovah, Savior, etc” written across the beams.
The alarm went off at 2:00 am. We needed to be up and ready to board the bus by 3:00. It is actually not that difficult to get up early here or function with little sleep- I think it is the jet lag – it just hits you later in the day when it becomes nearly impossible to stay awake. We have a French press, starbucks extra bold French roast, and a travel water heater from REI, which definitely help with managing jet lag.
5:40 AM local time. On a bus in Coimbatore, on our way to a tribal pastors conference. The drive is 4-5 hours to go 60 miles into the jungle, so I have time to catch up on yesterday’s happenings.
Our day started today at the ‘Goldan Manor’ Hotel in Jaipur (real spelling). After our night at the bazzar, no one slept particularly well. Most of the team reported sleeping intermittently after midnight and being very awake at about 4:00, presumably as a result of jet lag. One of the team felt ill in the airport and we prayed for him in the airport.
End of second full day in India. We had a scare at the bed and breakfast this morning when the owner questioned me about our purposes in the region and where we went last night. Apparently my answers did not satisfy him he subsequently questioned our Indian guide and the atmosphere became very tense. We were concerned that he was going to report us to the authorities, and left as quickly as we could.
Praise God! We are in our second full day in India. We left Denver at 3pm on January 17 (Tuesday), flew to Washington D.C., then 11+ hours to Doha, Qatar. Qatar airlines was terrific, but 11 hours in a plane is, after all, 11 hours in a plane. Everyone slept as we could, and we arrived in Doha, Qatar at about 6 pm local time. The flight was safe and smooth. As I prayed on the flights, I saw Jesus standing above and behind the plane, arms outspread. I felt safe and content and was able to sleep intermittently.
One day, I was praying in my office, which has a view of a field and the mountains. I had my bible open to Matthew Chapter 10, where Jesus is sending out His disciples. I read the passage bit by bit, and paced around my office looking out the windows. As I thought about the fears I struggled with, a flock of sparrows landed in a tree in my view, as if on cue.
Gabe and I are grateful for your tremendous support as we prepare to leave for Asia tomorrow. We have cards, letters, gifts and materials for the children’s’ homes, as well as a substantial special offering to deliver to each missionary. Thank you for your generosity. We are blessed and honored to serve as your ambassadors to missionaries in the field in Asia.
